If you were thinking that online poker in California is dead in 2016 - not so fast.

It now appears that there is a chance that AB 2863 may see some action this month in the state legislature.

The big question now is whether there's enough time to push it through to the Governor's desk.

According to a report out of the L.A. Times, there is a chance that online poker moves forward this month. Just how much progress it makes remains to be seen.

Senate Leader Chief of Staff Claims Assembly Bill to Be Brought Up on Monday

The L.A. Times issued an interesting report on Wednesday discussing several California legal matters, one of which was online poker.

Patrick McGreevy spoke with Senate leader Kevin De León on several matters but on online poker he said that they were "not in a rush for anything."

This was different from what Assemblyman Adam Gray's chief of staff told reporters. In a statement released to reporters, Trent Hagar revealed that AB 2863 will be brought up on the Assembly floor on Monday.

It is unclear whether this will just be a debate, a reading of the bill or if an actual vote will occur.

What Happens Next if the Bill Passes Assembly?

Let's say for sake of argument that the bill comes up to a vote on Monday and it passes the Assembly. That would be the best-case scenario, but it is only the first of three big steps.

After passing the Assembly, the bill must go through committee hearings in the Senate and then come up for a full vote in the Senate.

If the Senate manages to pass the bill, then it goes to Governor Jerry Brown's desk to await his signature. The question now remains whether there's enough time to pass the bill.

Legislative Session Ends August 31

Winter is coming, and so is the end of the CA legislative session. It ends on August 31.

This means that lawmakers have about 3 1/2 weeks left to get a bill voted on in the Assembly, pushed through and voted on in the Senate and signed by Gov. Brown.

One would assume that there's simply not enough time left. However, if the Assembly were to act this week, there's a chance they could pull off a last-second miracle.

Spend this coming week to pass the bill in the Assembly and push the bill through Senate committee hearings. Then on the week ending the 19th, they could focus on passing the bill in the Senate.

If a bill could be pushed through both chambers by the 22nd, there would be over a week left for Gov. Brown to sign.

Chances are that if anything happens, it will be last minute, possibly as late as August 29 or 30.

Will the tribes compromise enough to allow online poker to move forward? Can a bill be pushed though by the end of the month?

Never say never but we would speculate that if a bill hasn't passed the Assembly by August 15, then it will be "wait until 2017."
